I plugged the following into the Azure TCO Calculator:Īfter punching the "Calculate" button, the results returned were $13,047 for on-premises over 3 years and $5,672 for Azure over 3 years. After a myriad of calculations, we ended up with Azure being $200 per month and on-premises being $164 per month or in terms of three year costs, $7,200 versus $5,904. My equivalent in the cloud was a Microsoft Azure IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) server, a D2 SSD 2 cores 7 GB RAM and 100 GB of disk. For review, the first use case I covered was for a single, on-premises, physical server a Dell R320 configured with dual 350W power supplies. So, I decided to plug in the two major use cases from my article and see how the cost comparisons came out. This fits pretty well with the way I approached the analysis. The first thing that I noticed about the Azure TCO Calculator is that it is pretty much focused on providing TCO comparisons for physical and virtual servers on-premises versus running those servers in Azure. Actually, I'm not sure I believe that, but I needed some kind of setup for this article so here we go. While I don't often look back, sometimes it is a worthwhile exercise to practice self reflection and learn from the things you did right and the things you did wrong. So, since my original article used Azure as the basis for cloud cost comparison, I decided that it would be an interesting exercise to revisit this discussion and compare and contrast my original article with Microsoft's own TCO tool in order to see where our approaches were similar and where they differed, whether or not Microsoft's TCO tool is a better comparison and to see how my original article stacked up against an "official" tool from Microsoft themselves.
I am not sure exactly when this was released but the fact that it is in Preview tells me it must have been fairly recently.
Just recently, I was on the Azure Pricing site and noticed that there is an Azure TCO Calculator in Preview. In the first two weeks of January of this year from January 1st, 2017 to January 18th, 2017, the article was viewed more than 1,000 times! In fact, that article has become increasingly popular over time. In the past year, that article has been viewed over 5,000 times, shared over 30 times and had more than 100 "likes".
